Betty Mae Galligan Obituary

Betty Mae Galligan, 89, of West Orange, NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. She was born in September 1935, in Orange, NJ, the daughter of Michael and Anne (Rooney) Galligan.

A lifelong caregiver and devoted professional, Betty worked for many decades as a registered nurse at Orange Memorial Hospital, where she touched countless lives with her compassion, humor, steady presence, and healing hands.

Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. A dedicated and active member of Our Lady of the Valley Roman Catholic Church in West Orange, Betty gave generously of her time and talents—most notably by providing free health screenings to members of the congregation.

Betty also had a deep love for travel, with a special fondness for Ireland. She journeyed extensively throughout the country, immersing herself in its culture and connecting with her roots.

Betty is survived by her nieces, Susan Norman (Dennis) of Connecticut, Eileen Bydlinski (Stan); and Mary Beth Cook (Michael) both of Massachusetts; as well as many grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many cherished cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Charles Galligan.

A Memorial Mass celebrating Betty’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 10:00am in Our Lady of the Valley Church in West Orange. Burial of ashes will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Betty will be remembered for her warmth, quick Irish wit, unwavering kindness, and her deep devotion to helping others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty's memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Our Lady of the Valley Church would be appreciated.
