Joseph Corey McLaughlin Obituary

Joseph Corey McLaughlin, a lifelong New Jersey resident, and member of the Irvington community, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the age of 39.

Born in March 1986 in Newark, Corey grew up in West Orange and graduated from West Orange High School in 2005. He later earned a certification in Auto Mechanics from Lincoln Tech in Union - an expression of his love for working with his hands and solving problems.

Corey was known for his kind heart, gentle nature, and deep love of animals and music. He brought warmth and compassion to everyone who knew him.

Deemed a child prodigy, Corey mastered the drums at a very young age, impressing anyone who heard him play. He was a competitive and enthusiastic gamer who challenged his opponents and offered valuable support to his gamer friends. Mechanically gifted, Corey could diagnose and resolve issues that stumped master technicians. His ability to solve problems extended far beyond his passion for cars. His love of electronics would often lead to complex set ups and repairs of laptops, cell phones, tablets, TVs and much more.

Corey wore many different hats in his life and acts of service was how he chose to share his love with others. He was a pillar of strength during times of turmoil, offering encouragement when life got you down. Corey was a source of comfort, providing a listening ear without judgment accompanied with a warm hug. He was a caretaker to those who needed assistance in any capacity. Everyone who crossed paths with him couldn’t resist his warm smile and wonderfully pleasant personality.

Corey was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Ellen McLaughlin; and his sister, Mary Aiesha McLaughlin. He is survived by his beloved life partner, Tameka Spearman, who stood by him with unwavering love and strength throughout his illness. Corey is also survived by Tameka’s parents, JB and Linda Spearman; his siblings, Phil McLaughlin, Eileen Kelly, Marianne McLaughlin-Britt, Kellie Fabiano, Julie Hamberlin, and Dawn McLaughlin as well as fourteen nieces and nephews and seven great nieces and nephews along with many cherished cousins and extended family.

Corey shared a special bond with Tameka and together they built a life filled with laughter, mutual respect and unconditional support. Her love and care were constants during his illness and brought him great comfort and joy.
