Lord have Mercy. Irene was a good person. It was in her smile and her character. Her heart was always in the right place and she touched the heart of so many. She was a blessing to all the people she met. Her life will not be forgotten. I will continue to pray for her as her soul goes on a new journey. I love you Irene. I loved you in life and nothing changed. Be well and may your soul continue from the experiences of your goodness you have shown in your earthly form. I will love you always. To the family of Irene, have peace and love. God is with you in these times.

Thinking of you during this difficult time.
Irene was always a light in and to the world; lighting a candle for her always.
Her light will long live in the many friendships, programs, projects, organizations, accomplishments, and everything thing she touched in life. Her kindness was beyond expression of words. A true inspiration...forever in our hearts and memories!!! You will be missed very much, Irene!

Irene Gibbons worked at the West Caldwell Campus of Essex County College and served on the Advisory Board for the branch campus until her passing. As the Associate Dean of the campus, I appreciated her guidance, support, and contributions to the discussions for the betterment of the campus. She was caring, kind, and always understood the plight of the students and the community. She was instrumental in raising scholarships for our graduating students and always had encouraging words motivating them to reach for their goals.
I will miss Irene very much. My condolences to the family as well as a warm thank you for sharing their beloved mother with all of us.

So sorry to hear of the loss of such a great woman and role model.
Irene married my husband and I 24 years ago and we will never forget how amazing she was. As a longtime protege of my late Grandfather George Kaplan, her officiating was so meaningful for Rob and I (and our families).
We wish you a lifetime of great memories and so sorry for your loss!
Prayers,
Allison and Robert Wright

Carol and Geoff --
So sorry for your loss. I'll never forget your mother at Paul's christening party (and your father's 'emergency' baptism!).
But I never realized her amazing achievements (apart from being the first woman mayor) until reading the obituary. She was some dynamo!
Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Gibbons Family, Please accept my condolences. I was especially fond of Irene; she
always was so helpful when I ran fundraisers for University Women of West Essex.
However, I just plain adored her because she was such a warm, loving person, and so smart. I am sad that she didn't want visitors at Crane's Mill; I would have visited her & brought anything she needed. She was a dynamic, amazing person and I will never forget her. She will be sorely missed.
Sincerely, Wendy Bohrer

I would like to send my sincere condolences to Irene’s wonderful family, and pay tribute to her iconic life and place in our memories and our history here in the Caldwells!! We have been blessed to have Irene grace us with her presence and serve our community faithfully for many years. It is impossible to list her many accomplishments as honored Mayor, role model, historian, friend and teacher. To me, Irene was a cherished neighbor I will never forget. With a grateful heart, I share our common faith that she is not gone, but in a magnificent place—where she is being greeted by her beloved husband, Patrick and many loved ones. Perhaps some VIPs as well—no doubt Grover Cleveland, whose birthplace was dear to her heart!
When we moved to Bowers Road many years ago, Irene welcomed us and proudly shared the history of the Cedars. Through the years, I’ve marveled at her accomplishments and consider it a great privilege to have known her. Though her schedule was packed with meetings, social, and charitable events, she would always take time to ask about our family, and seemed to genuinely enjoy exchanging “news.” Often, I would congratulate her on her latest feat (clearly enamored at her energy), but she would swiftly shift the attention to another topic. She maintained a classic elegance which matched the way she carried herself—Many will remember her signature look – always dressed beautifully, proudly wearing her Kiwanis pin, with her hair swept up, in timeless fashion. As I read of Irene’s quest to “say yes” whenever possible, I remember a morning a few years back, when I noticed her trekking up my steep driveway, to drop a donation in my mailbox for a charity I was collecting for. Before I could get the door open and thank her, she was back in the car, no doubt on her way to church or one of her meetings. I was not surprised to learn she shattered the “glass ceiling” with her induction into Kiwanis and Rotary, and her early sources of inspiration! I will never forget Irene’s kind and gentle spirit, and will always be inspired by her responsiveness to the causes she held dear, and her ability to empower others to become more active in “our” community.
Irene ’s life is a tribute to what is possible when we put the needs of others ahead of our own. She will live on in our hearts, until we meet again.....
With love and friendship,
Mary Justice
