Obituary of Elizabeth H. Kapchus

Elizabeth "Betty" H. Kapchus, of West Caldwell, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, with her loving family by her side. She was a remarkable 94 years old. Born in Detroit, Michigan to James and Dora (Senay) Ham. She grew up in Dearborn, Michigan lived there until she joined the United States Coast Guard during World War II. During her service in the US Coast Guard she met and eventually married an Air Force Lt. Col., John F. Kapchus. Together they raised their two children first in Dearborn, Michigan, then in New Hyde Park, New York eventually moving to West Caldwell, New Jersey where she has lived for over 50 years. Betty was an active member and officer of the American Legion James Caldwell Post No. 185 and Ladies Auxiliary for many years. On Memorial Day of 1994, along with her husband, John, she was honored as the Grand Marshall of the West Essex Memorial Day Parade. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2004. Surviving are her devoted daughter, Kathleen "Kathy" McLaughlin; dear son, John F. Kapchus and his wife, Michelle; loving brother, Edward Ham; cherished grandchildren, John Kapchus, III, Joseph Kapchus, Evan McLaughlin and Trevor McLaughlin; also 5 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family at the Codey & Jones Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Avenue, Caldwell, New Jersey 07006 on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 4 – 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 219 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 10:00 am.
