Obituary of James Joseph Flannery
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James Joseph Flannery, 68, of Queens, NY, formerly of Caldwell, NJ, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on Wednesday, January 10, 2018.
Jim was born in East Orange General Hospital. He was the son of the late James Joseph Flannery, Sr. and Regina (Lanagan) Flannery. Jim, along with his three sisters Anne, Mary, and Grace, were raised in East Orange and Orange before moving to Caldwell. Caldwell was where the Flannery Family made their home for many years. He and his wife, Mary Ellen have lived in Whitestone, Queens, NY since 2008.
Mr. Flannery was a graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School and Notre Dame University. He was a writer and editor, retiring from Le Monde in Paris, France.
Perhaps Jim would like to be remembered most as a beloved member of the Flannery Family. He enjoyed time spent with family, his wife and her children, sisters, nieces, and nephews – he especially enjoyed being an Uncle. He had a great love of literature, music, and history. Attending the theatre and opera in New York City were some of his favorite pastimes. He was a devout Catholic and being a member of the church was a significant part of his daily life.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen (Soderquist); devoted step-children, Kristin & Bret Andres; loving sisters with their spouses, Anne and Donald Reeves, Sr. and Grace and Timothy Kerrigan Sr.; cherished nephews, Donald Reeves, Andrew (Kimberley ) Reeves, Timothy (Lisa) Kerrigan, Jr., James (Mary Jo) Kerrigan; grand nieces and nephews, Michael Patrick and Kaitlyn Walsh, Michael P. Carlos, Samantha and Ava Reeves, Melanie, Cecelia, and Abigal Kerrigan.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a nephew, Michael J. Reeves, his niece Jeanne Walsh, and sister, Mary Flannery.
