Obituary of Marlene S. deGroot

Please share a memory of Marlene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marlene Salome deGroot transitioned on October 5, 2021.

She was affectionately known to family and friends as “Cheryl”. Cheryl was born in 1945 to Elizabeth and Joseph Timmers, in Springlands, Guyana. She completed her formal years of education in Guyana and was later employed with Guyana Airlines.

She married in 1973 and later welcomed two children, Cheryn and Andrea (Nadia). The family eventually emigrated to the United States (New York) from Guyana in 1977.

The family settled in New Jersey. At that time, Cheryl worked for Drexel Burham Lambert in New York City and later began employment with Securities Arbitration Commentator in New Jersey.

Once retired, she assumed the full time role of grandma, devoting much of her time and efforts to her grandchildren. She was a deeply loyal and devoted mom and grandmother. Education was of utmost importance. She always encouraged her children to do and be their best.  Cheryl would give her last to those she loved. She was honest and direct. She was forgiving, held no grudges - continuing with business as usual after any disagreement with loved ones. Cheryl was a child of God. She led by faith and implored all to do the same.

She is survived by her daughters, Cheryn deGroot and Andrea Nadia deGroot Wheatley; her former husband- Michael deGroot; her grandchildren, Genesis deGroot-Coleman, Jordan deGroot-Coleman, Kevin Wheatley Jr. and Michaela Wheatley; her son-in-law, Kevin Wheatley Sr.; her siblings, Walter Timmers, Jean Webb, Leslie Timmers (Garvin), Joan Modeste and Patsy Noble; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and endearing friends.

Cheryl was predeceased by her siblings, Claudine Beckles, Lionel Timmers, Ishbel Rollins, Joseph Timmers, Lloyd Timmers and Maud Snet.
