Martha Font, of Fairview NJ, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on January 11, 2022, a few weeks shy of her 90th birthday.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service for Martha at the Codey Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Avenue, Caldwell on Saturday, the 15th of January from 2:00 -4:00PM. A Prayer Service will be at 3:30PM.

Born and raised in Camagüey, Cuba, Martha was the second of five children born to Francisco Freyre and Amelia Delgado Gonzalez. She was the last surviving member of her immediate birth family.

Fulfilling her dream of moving to the United States, Martha and her husband, Manuel (Manolo) Salazar, immigrated to Union City, NJ shortly after she completed an advanced art program in her 20’s.

Martha started her career in the textiles industry as an embroidery mender, fixing stitches missed by the factory’s automated embroidery machines. Her experience and artistic talents eventually led her to a position as an embroidery designer and sample maker. She created designs for linens and clothing in several New Jersey embroidery fashion houses and eventually worked at Libra Lace in New York City.

In her spare time, Martha enjoyed designing and sewing clothes for herself and her family. She looked forward to spending time with her family, especially during the holidays. She loved dancing and enjoyed many Sunday afternoons at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.

Martha was preceded in death by her daughter, Martha Levendoski; her former husbands, Manuel Salazar and Paul Font; as well as her parents, Francisco Freyre and Amelia Delgado Gonzalez; and her siblings, Berta Josefina Freyre, Arturo Freyre, Jose (Pepe) Freyre and Francisco (Papin) Freyre.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Carmen and her husband, John Wiedmann; her treasured grandchildren, Danielle and Michelle; her half brother, Edel Freyre Soto and his wife Jessica Freyre; her half brother, Fransisco Freyre; her half sisters, Violeta Freyre, Magdalena Freyre and Magda Freyre; and many nephews, nieces and close cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the St Jude Shrine in Baltimore MD.
