I worked with Doug as an SP at NYU. He was an absolute ray of sunshine -- the kind of person who can pick up a conversation with anyone (and share great stories!) and immediately make them feel like a friend. Doug and I once had hours to kill in the "SP lounge" during a long and tiring day. We had never met before but we began chatting and he absolutely brightened my day. I heard all about his family, his wife and her passing, the many fascinating chapters of his life... His love for his children and wife was so clear (even to someone who just met him at an early 7am gig!). I became so fond of him. He was always such a friendly face to see at work - I am not surprised to see so many notes here from fellow SPs. I am so saddened to hear of his passing and send love to his beloved family.

How sad to think we will never run into Doug again, down at NYU Langone. We often played cases together in the SP program there and shared stories and laughter during our down time. He had that charming twinkle in his eye and always had interesting anecdotes. Some funny stories about his Uncle's (or cousin's) funeral home come to mind. He was a great listener and was always happy to offer a hand, if needed. It was a pleasure to be in his company and we will miss him greatly.
Best wishes to Doug's family (who he talked about constantly, btw)!

I just learned of Doug's passing and my heart is sore for his family and all who knew and loved him. We worked together as Standardized Patients at NYU Langone for the past few years, and he was always a ray of light on very early mornings (as actors - we do not like early mornings). I heard so many stories about his past and his kids on the occasions we would spend long days together - he portraying a patient and me attempting to portray a nurse for the med students. I'll never forget his laugh and how he would often crack himself up with his own jokes. When we returned to SP work after the worst of the pandemic was over and he learned I'd eloped with my partner of 15 years during it because I'd needed health insurance, he sent me a note with wonderful pearls of wisdom. He also told me it was the most practical reason he could think of to get married and I - a woman who had never included marriage in my life plan - really took that to heart. He will be missed by our SP family, as I know he will be missed by all who knew him.

I just learned of Doug’s passing and watched the beautiful video tribute. I knew Doug from SP work in NYC. He was always friendly and we would catch up what had happened between the last time we had seen each other…and the world will have more caring aware doctors because of the work he did in the med schools lucky enough to have him on the roster. The video captured the loving grandfather, father and husband and I wish his family comfort in the memories and moments captured in the video and beyond.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Doug's passing. I worked with him as a Standardized Patient for a few years at NYU Langone Grossman School of Medicine. He was a man of tremendous spirit and spoke often of his beloved family and of his great love and wife Cathy who had passed before him. The photo display here confirms the love and joy he brought to the world and our work enviornment. He never told me about running an ice cream truck but it makes perfect sense. I extend my most heartfelt condolences to his family and community. We will miss him greatly at NYSIM.

I met and got to know Doug as a student at Rutgers in 1971. His girlfriend then was a close home friend with my girlfriend then who became my wife, Elizabeth Napolitano. We played a lot of tennis together over subsequent years and were close friends then.
What I learned from Doug extensively was the realities of the Vietnam War as he experienced it on the ground as an infantryman. He was a great raconteur and had a great memory for details. I spent many evenings listening to details of daily life, battles in jungle and amidst civilian populations, once the terror of being overrun, and how the military leadership would make arbitrary decisions that put the grunts in peril. One phrase of his I have always remembered, "Military intelligence is a contradiction in terms." I joined him in believing the utter futility of the US being in the war, and was an activist opposing the war. Doug seemed to have had incredible resilience in surviving the traumas of that war and emerging as a kind, compassionate human being.
I wish that we had stayed more in touch, but I am glad that in the 1990-s we reconnected. Several times, my family and I enjoyed a few days visiting Doug and his family in Point Pleasant Beach.
I mourn his passing deeply, grateful for what he taught me in friendship.

Doug was our neighbor since year 2017. He was very kind, caring and loving person. Whenever we met, we discussed a lot on various topics. He would tell his stories, how he loved his time with his grandchildren. He was always smiling and very friendly. We can’t believe that he is no more with us and will miss very much our discussions.
Doug, you will always be in our hearts and memories. Rest in peace.
