Q: How did you meet John?
A: I grew up/lived in Orange on 582 chestnut street until I was 16 a number of houses from up from Marty's deli and Metcalf playground. Jacky Sayers was a friend of mine along with a number of other kids from Orange/West Orange. Everyone had nicknames and his was "Toes" because he walked on his toes a lot.
My condolence to the entire family that you lost a husband, dad, grandfather and countless friends. Will pray for all of you and it all about the memories, those you can cherish forever

Jack was my cousin . He was a good man in all I know of him. He cared about everyone . He was instrumental in reuniting me with my sister who was near her death . We went to lunch together . He even drove me to the home she was in since he felt it unsafe for me to go alone . Since it was not in the best part of Newark . My family will be ever grateful for Jacks intervention and sincere caring for my sister Gloria. Jack also provided a Sheriffs escort for my niece Diana’s funeral . You were family to Jack and that was very important to him . If it wasn’t forJack I would never had the opportunity to see my sister before she died . I wasn’t even aware of her illness. My sister was a good person but had mental difficulties which made it very difficult to deal with her. Some how Jack stayed in touch with her and visited her and then contacted me . He was truly a blessed man and I am sure will be rewarded in heaven . Thank you Jack . Gary Leeman & Sharlene Leeman

I want to express my great sorrow to Jack’s family upon his passing. I know the awful progressive ALS disease he suffered from had to have made his last chapters particularly difficult and in that regard his passing was merciful but the loss hurts no less. Jack was a class act. He had great political and leadership instincts and used them relentlessly in the service of others, never selfishly. He just gave and gave and gave with genuine concern for all of those in the West Orange municipal family - residents, employees, municipal officials - their problems became his and he was always making best efforts to understand and solve them. He had to make many tough decisions as West Orange Business Administrator and he always wanted to get them right. When lifelong West Orange resident Abe Lando, a WWII veteran and Deputy Mayor was nearing his end Jack visited him regularly, brought him food and made sure he was comfortable and not alone. When Abe passed away Jack arranged for the funeral procession to pass Town Hall on the way to the cemetery - a final visit for Abe and an opportunity for employees and officials to show their respect. Unbeknown to most, Jack did what he could for the homeless woman who frequented Town Hall, making sure she was able to eat and had some dignity. That was Jack -- always giving of himself, leading by example, as thoughtful and caring a public servant as has ever walked the planet. He will be much missed by many. May peace be with him and with his family.

Mr. Sayers, Coach or later on in life if I was feeling bold Jack left an enormous impact on all of us as kids. It was only later in life that you realize his commitment to his kids, their friends and their sports teams was a big sacrifice… but he played the role better than anyone. I have memories I’ll remember as long as I live of Big Jack and luckily (unlike his kids) no basketball imprints on my head to go along with those memories. He taught discipline, commitment and most importantly how to be there for each other. Something we carried long after we were kids. He will truly be missed but I smile knowing how happy he is looking down on the legacy of such an amazing family.

Jack, I can remember when you were about 9 or 10 years old, I used to take you down to the valley to our hangout on the corner, "Adelenes" for ice cream and cookies, and your brother in law Ed used to carry you around on his shoulders and you were happy as a lark. May God Bless you, you will always be in my prayers. My deepest sympathy to Rosemary and your family. Your cousin, Ricky Kettell

Being a Police Lieutenant in the Detective Bureau I had many interactions with Jack as Police Director. He was professional. He also had a great sense of humor. May he rest in Peace. Condolences to his family.
